Located in the northeastern part of Bullitt County, the city of Louisville, KY. lies directly north (downtown being 20 minutes away).
This part of the metropolitan area was established around the 1800’s. Mt. Washington was originally named ‘The Cross Roads’ for the two stagecoach cross road routes from Bardstown to Louisville and from Shepherdsville to Shelbyville. They then changed their name to Mt. Vernon after President George Washington’s home in Virginia. However, when a post office applied for it, it was discovered that there was already a city in Kentucky with that name. Therefore, becoming what is known today as Mount Washington.
Today’s Mt. Washington was recently recognized as one of the safest areas for families in Kentucky. Bullitt East High School was named a “school of distinction” ranked as the top 10 performing schools in Kentucky.
